  Section 2. The land court department shall consist of 6 associate justices appointed to the land court department. The justice as provided under section one of chapter two hundred and eleven B as the chief justice for the land court department, in addition to his judicial powers and duties, shall, subject to the superintendence authority of the supreme judicial court as provided in section three of chapter two hundred and eleven and the administrative authority of the office of the chief justice for administration and management, be the administrative head of the land court department, and shall also have the power, authority and responsibility of a chief justice as set forth in section ten of chapter two hundred and eleven B. Said chief justice shall serve as the chief justice of that department for a five-year term and shall be eligible to be reappointed to serve additional five-year terms. Said chief justice may be removed from his position as chief justice when it is determined by the chief justice for administration and management to be in the best interests of the administration of justice.

  Section 2. The land court department shall consist of 7 justices, including the chief justice, appointed to the land court department. The justice as provided under section 1 of chapter 211B as the chief justice for the land court department, in addition to his judicial powers and duties, shall, subject to the superintendence authority of the supreme judicial court as provided in section 3 of chapter 211, have the power, authority and responsibility of a chief justice as set forth in section 10 of chapter 211B.
